Let us celebrate!

By Laura Belcher

What started 36 years ago as a group of seven local churches seeking to make an impact on affordable housing, has grown into an organization that has partnered with over 2,000 families here in the Charlotte community. That’s more than 5,000 individuals that have found strength, stability and self-reliance through affordable homeownership…something that wouldn’t have been possible without our volunteers, donors and community partners, who make our mission possible each and every day.

And we have big plans to serve even more families in the years to come.

This year alone, Habitat Charlotte will partner with more than 220 area families through new homeownership, Critical Home Repair and financial literacy education – that’s 80 families more than last year!

We will also complete Habitat Charlotte’s first raw land development community – our 21-home neighborhood on Red Vest Way and begin construction on a projected 30 homes in West Charlotte’s Wingate community. And we hope to break ground on city donated land in Morris Field; which will result in our largest ground up development to date with as many as 47 homes, which includes developing the roads, sewers and power.

And thanks to large investments from the City of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and Blue Cross Blue Shield NC, we will serve 20 more homeowners through our Critical Home Repair program – that’s nearly 100 this year alone – many of whom are seniors living on fixed incomes.

We will provide financial literacy training through our new Money Matters program to over 60 deserving Charlotte families. This four-week course is designed to aid families that do not yet meet the Habitat homeownership criteria and we work collaboratively to improve their financial situation and better prepare them for homeownership with Habitat or elsewhere in the marketplace.

The past year was a busy one, and the current year simply races forward – at Habitat Charlotte we are growing and stretching to adapt to the changing community we live in. When I think about what the future brings, the new and innovative ways we can impact even more families, I know in my heart that the Habitat Charlotte team is up to the challenge and will rise up to meet the needs of this community.

During this season of giving, we cannot express just how grateful we are for everyone who played a part in achieving this remarkable milestone. We appreciate your continued support, and look forward to helping even more families achieve their dream of safe and affordable homeownership.

Thank you!
