Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 and builds simple and affordable homes in partnership with those in need of decent housing. Families purchase the houses through interest-free loans. To date, Habitat has built over 225,000 homes worldwide, providing more than 1 million people with housing.
Habitat operates at the grassroots level, with affiliates in all 50 states and a presence in 94 other countries. Local residents in each community direct the affiliates and are responsible for family selection, fundraising, house construction and all day-to-day operations. Habitat Charlotte is the 7th-ranked affiliate in the U.S.
