Are you from Charlotte?
No. I'm from Florida. I've lived here for 14 years.
So what brought you to the city?
My husband was a captain for US Airways. His job brought us here.
What do you do at the ReStore? Do you have a special assignment that you do when you're there?
I originally put up the vignettes in the front and keep them updated. I do consulting and appraising, which includes helping with the pricing. I also help to beautify the store. I do things like pick out colors, decorate, hang pictures, and make unappealing pieces of furniture look more appealing.
What do you do when you're not working at the ReStore?
I'm an interior designer and a partner at Amelie's French Bakery.
Wow! It must be awesome to be able to volunteer doing what you love to do.
It is wonderful! I have so much fun.
When did you first start volunteering with the ReStore?
Actually, I started working here before it opened. Three weeks before it opened Frank Reed, a friend from church, showed us around. I got so excited and started volunteering that day.
What motivated you to volunteer? What got you so excited?
I am a big believer in recycling and not buying new all the time. I always encourage my clients to do it. The things at the ReStore have a little bit of history, and you can find unique things you can't find in stores. I shop for a lot of my clients at the ReStore. When I'm here, if I'm not volunteering , I'm shopping.
Do you volunteer anywhere else?
I used to volunteer with Heal the Children, an organization that provides medical care to children in need. I also taught parenting classes. Now all of my free time goes to Habitat.
What's the best part about working at the ReStore?
I love the people. We all have a common interest. I've made some valuable friends.
Is there anything else you want to share about your experiences at the ReStore or about volunteering in general?
I can't think of a better place to volunteer. [The ReStore] is such a great fit for me. I get to do what I love. Volunteering is a great way to spend spare time that you would otherwise spend watching television or just sitting around.
