The Habitat Critical Home Repair Program

Habitat Critical Home Repair (HCHR) is an initiative launched in 2007 in collaboration with Love, Inc. The program serves economically disadvantaged homeowners in Charlotte and works intensively with families to rectify housing code violations. Our purpose is to provide urgent major repairs to prevent homeowners from being displaced and to protect Charlotte’s affordable housing stock. We replace rotted roofs, floors and unsafe wiring. We partner with families, who agree to a monthly payment in the form of a zero-interest, long-term adjustable loan. In the first year, we served a total of 12 families and corrected 553 major code Habitat Critical Home Repair logo violations.

Qualifications for the program:

  • Live in a central city neighborhood
  • Must have a need for a major repair
  • Homeowner must own and live in home
  • Must fall below 50% of HUD median income (Income limits PDF)

Sponsor an Adopt-A-Repair Project:

The Adopt-A-Repair project sponsorship fee is $7,500. The fee covers the costs of the project. This sponsorship offers an opportunity for volunteers to work in small groups and have a direct impact on Charlotte’s affordable housing stock. For more information on sponsoring a repair project, please call 704.716.7073.

Volunteers Needed:

We welcome volunteers to our projects. Anyone who can volunteer a minimum of four days per year should consider taking one of our classes. Classes will be offered in roofing, electrical work, and insulation.
